Minneapolis Fire Station 14
Minneapolis, MN

With its official grand opening in June 2006, the new Minneapolis Fire Station 14 is now home base for three rotating shifts of 27 firefighters, six fire captains and three battalion chiefs. These fire crews serve as first responders in an emergency for people in north and northeast Minneapolis.

AKA’s design maximizes space and systems efficiencies, and clearly separates work environments from living quarters. There are three apparatus bays, living quarters for up to 36 firefighters, and a control center with radio and dispatch.

The exterior reflects the community’s desire to have a more historic or traditional looking firehouse, but interior and mechanical systems reflect a more modern day approach. The new station’s “green design” features include daylighting controls, fully-automated building controls, and rain garden for natural storm water management. The building’s highlight is the green roof, complete with emerging native plants.
