Grandview Community Center
Grandview, MO

In November of 2001, voters in Grandview, Missouri approved a half-cent sales tax increase to construct and operate a community center. In February 2004, the Grandview Community Center became a reality.

AKA worked with the City of Grandview to plan and design a community center that would strengthen community identity. The resulting community center is located adjacent to an existing city park and outdoor swimming pool. The building’s facilities are organized along a central interior corridor that features visual connections between outdoor and indoor public spaces. An upper level entry provides an overlook with views to the aquatics center and gymnasium. Other components within the facility include new office space for the park and recreation department, childcare, fitness areas, a running track, a senior center, a craft room, and a banquet/multipurpose room for up to 250 people.

An existing grove of trees was an important site amenity and became a metaphor for the project, influencing design decisions such as the building location, skylight placement and glass detailing. The resulting effect of walking through the grove is experienced each day.
